It is becoming increasingly common to find high-quality dry extracts in clubs, based on the separation of trichomes through their electrostatic charge. As a result, the final product stands out for its exceptional preservation of cannabinoids and terpenes.

Although Static Hash Shift is often referred to as an extraction method, it is actually a purification system for already extracted hash. It is based on the use of a static charge to separate the highest-quality material from plant matter and stalked trichomes without heads. This method is far less invasive than those traditionally used, allowing for much better preservation of trichomes and cannabinoids. In its early days, very rudimentary tools were used, such as balloons, parchment paper, or combs charged with static electricity through friction with wool or fabric. Once the trichomes are trapped, they are carefully separated, resulting in the final extract.
In any case, these systems are generally very homemade, which is why licensed cultivations, CBD farms, and other legal operations use machines that simplify the process. One example of these machines is the range manufactured by Ion+ Industries, offering different sizes and models, from the large Titan model to the recently introduced domestic version.

The process begins once the extracted hash is placed into the lower hopper. From there, a vibrator is activated to set the material in motion. Then, an injector blows air into the system, propelling the hash through a circuit where it travels inside a spiraled plastic tube. At this stage, the hash acquires an electrostatic charge through friction. Trichomes develop different electrostatic charges depending on their chemotype, especially if they contain CBDA or THCA. This difference is due to the presence of the acidic carboxyl group in the molecule, which influences its behavior in electrostatic fields.
Geometry and aerodynamics also play a fundamental role: heavier and more rounded particles — such as intact trichome heads — tend to generate a stronger charge and maintain more direct trajectories, improving separation precision. In addition, the diameter of the trichome head is a determining factor, as it directly influences the weight-to-chargeable-compounds ratio, affecting both the intensity and stability of the electrostatic response.
This process works optimally when the trichome head is completely separated from the stalk, as both structures usually acquire opposite charges. If they remain attached, these charges can cancel each other out, reducing the efficiency of the separation system.
Once the material reaches the upper section of the machine, two electrostatic generators apply opposite charges to plates located on each side of the material’s falling path. The trichomes are attracted toward one plate, while plant matter and impurities move toward the opposite plate, depending on their charge and trajectory.
Depending on the starting material, the electrostatic generators can be adjusted to provide more or less power. The machine also allows the operator to move the collection plates closer or farther apart, where the hash and impurities adhere. The distance is calibrated according to material quality. For example, if the material contains few contaminants, both plates can be set at the same distance and power. If the starting material contains many impurities, the positive plate is moved slightly farther away and supplied with more power. Each extractor gradually learns how to adjust these parameters according to the specific needs of the material being processed.
Additionally, the flow of material entering the circuit can be regulated through the vibrator, so it is recommended to work slowly and carefully, as this consistently produces higher yields and better quality.
To finish the process, the trichomes adhered to the plate are collected. As for contaminants, if the starting material was of poor quality, smaller trichomes may remain trapped within the plant matter, since they are intercepted by impurities while moving toward the positive plate. In such cases, a second pass may be necessary to ensure complete recovery.
When using high-quality hash, the purity levels achieved with this machine range between 98% and 99%, producing a material that stands out not only for its potency, but also for its terpene preservation, resulting in hash with exceptional flavor and effects.
Ion+ Industries is known for the high quality of its components, featuring details such as anodized aluminum construction, integrated safety systems to prevent accidental discharges or sparks, and hermetically sealed generators, vibrators, and air injectors to prevent dust contamination. Their after-sales service is also worth highlighting, as they supply replacement parts from Europe at very affordable prices.
Tips for Producing Static Hash
First of all, it should be noted that this technique is primarily aimed at purifying dry-sift extractions. The higher the quality of the starting material, the easier it becomes to achieve an elite final result. However, it can also be used to purify bubble hash, provided that the trichome membranes were not damaged during extraction and the material has been properly dried.
The best results are achieved when working in a cold and dry environment. Controlling ambient humidity is essential, as excess moisture in the air can discharge the materials, reducing the efficiency of the process. This system is commonly used by licensed companies in legal markets and by CBD businesses, which often install the equipment inside refrigerated chambers to maintain optimal conditions, since static electricity dissipates more quickly in humid environments.
At Ion+ Industries, they recommend operating between -3°C and 10°C, with humidity levels ranging from 30% to 55%. It is also important for the workspace to remain clean and free of contaminants.
It is crucial that the material is thoroughly dry. Otherwise, the trichome stalks may also acquire a positive charge, making separation more difficult. To prevent interference from these stalks, a very light preliminary pass over a silkscreen mesh can be performed to remove them. In some cases, freeze dryers are also used to achieve maximum dryness, which is especially useful when processing bubble hash.
Examine the final result under a microscope. Ideally, only pure trichomes free of contaminants should be visible, with a certain level of translucency. Finally, some people vacuum-seal the product and allow it to cure for several months in order to achieve truly exceptional quality.
“The result is a hash with an exceptionally high-level flavor and effect.”
